Teresa Frisbie Named Executive Director of Chicago International Dispute Resolution Association

Chicago, Illinois – Teresa F. Frisbie, of Davis Mannix and McGrath, Chicago, has been named executive director of the Chicago International Dispute Resolution Association (CIDRA), a forum for arbitration and mediation of cross-border commercial disputes. Formerly a partner at the now dissolved law firm of Foran & Schultz, Frisbie is a veteran mediator, arbitrator, and trial lawyer. Frisbie is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London), and a CIDRA panel member.

Peter V. Baugher, president of CIDRA and a partner at Schopf & Weiss, said, "We are very excited about this development for CIDRA. The need for highly respected arbitrators and mediators with international expertise is growing every day, and although many corporate leaders, lawyers, judges and arbitrators don't realize it yet, they are already involved in international arbitrations subject to special statutes and treaties."

Frisbie noted that: "Here in Illinois, we have enacted the Illinois International Commercial Arbitration Act. It mirrors the United Nations model law governing international arbitrations. This same statute has been enacted in countries all over the world.

"It doesn't take much for an arbitration to fall under the law. If an individual or business based in the U.S. is having a dispute with another company doing business in the U.S., and the dispute is really connected to the branch of the business located outside the U.S., that would become an international arbitration. So would the case of two U.S. individuals or businesses doing business together when most of the business will be performed outside the U.S. Basically, any time the subject matter of the dispute is most closely connected to another country, it is an international arbitration which falls under the special international laws and treaties."

Frisbie graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in 1983 and obtained her J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago in 1986. She is admitted to practice in Illinois and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and has been a member of the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois since 1989.

CIDRA, based at the World Trade Center in Chicago, exists to provide flexible, efficient mediations and arbitrations for the business community, which is finding itself increasingly confronted with disputes which cross national borders.
